About Us
Mayo College is a fully residential school of symbolic legacy and profound repute. It was founded in 1875 by Richard Bourke, 6th Earl of Mayo - who was also the Viceroy of India from 1869 to 1872. It is one of the oldest public boarding schools in India and has a sister school called Mayo College Girls’ School right across the street. Nicknamed the 'Eton of the East', it was established to provide modern education to the aristocracy. However, the school has been following an egalitarian philosophy from the last 70 years and accepts students from all communities and regions across the world. It serves over 800 students at its sprawling 350 acre campus in Ajmer, Rajasthan. It is steeped in history and tradition, and a walk around campus gives a snapshot of all the history its buildings hold, from the colonial times to the modern era. It also has a rich tradition of excellence in sports and its alumni, called ‘Mayoites’ occupy prominent positions in all facets of human activity, from politics to sport, all across the world. Team Mayo is committed to a holistic education and views education as having intrinsic value, quite apart from its function of increasing vocational opportunities. The onus lies not only in the development of academic skills, but also vital non-cognitive skills.
