About Us

Barnes School was founded on 29th January 1925 in memory of Archdeacon George Barnes who had started the Bombay Education Society in 1815. During that time Barnes School was established primarily for Anglo-Indian children where they could be given a good upbringing and education. However, with relevance to the present social scenario, Barnes caters to all castes and creeds. Barnes School & Junior College is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), New Delhi, and has classes ranging from Nursery to Class XII, both for boarders and day scholars. With its ethereal location close to the Western Ghats, just a short distance away from mountains, forts and the majestic wind turbines, Barnes is known to be an excellent boarding institution that imparts sound moral, intellectual and physical education, where all students are exposed to a comprehensive course in value-based education. From academics to aesthetics, traditions to technology, Barnes has it all. It is an enigma, a muse that has transformed many a student into poets. While one alumnus has echoed the feelings of many by unabashedly confessing, “I have loved thee dearly, more dearly than the spoken word can tell” to his alma mater, many have lamented not having valued Barnes enough when they were here. Once you have been to Barnes, at some point in life you may forget some of the things that you learnt here, but you can never break your bond with Barnes, the School with a Soul, ever.
