The Value of Residential Schools in Today
July 02, 2023
Although today’s boarding schools are often compared with the ancient Gurukul system, there are several fundamental differences and similarities.
1. Ancient Gurukuls were exclusive to certain classes of the society. Students belonging to nobility, royalty and upper castes were eligible for entry into a Gurukul. Modern Gurukuls, aka boarding schools, are far more inclusive.
2. Like ancient Gurukul, modern Gurukul, too, emphasizes the students’ physical, emotional and intellectual development. However, the latter goes a step further and grades the stages of such development.
3. Our boarding schools provide education and impart various skills – social and professional – with the help of technology and sophisticated infrastructure.
4. Our boarding schools have an impressive set of well trained and highly skilled teachers and instructors who educate the students. In the past, the Guru was the sole provider of such knowledge.
5. The teacher student relationship today is more realistic and does not depend solely upon the highly personalized Guru-Shishya equation. This provides both the teacher and the student with personal space for growth.
Our boarding school education aims at helping students acquire supple minds that are capable of analytical thinking, while integrating complex core concepts that aid them to grow as responsible citizens.
They are provided with a firm foundation of scientific and technological knowledge that helps integrate their mindsets with the society’s present and future requirements. Regular class tests and examinations ensure the students remain focused on their academic excellence. Sporting activities inculcate in them discipline and determination to win through fair means while obeying the rules and regulations. Extracurricular activities like debates, performing and fine arts are sources of intellectual growth.
Thus, a modern Gurukul assimilates the best of the traditional and the modern.
