“For things will never be perfect, until human beings are perfect - which I don't expect them to be for quite a number of years!”
― Thomas More
Education has been widely accepted to be responsible for the improvement of an individual’s life and thereby contributing to the betterment of the society and development of nation. Since the times of Rigveda, which saw the spurt in the evolution of education system in India, the gurukuls were entrusted with the responsibility of raising holistic human beings by taking care of both the outer and the inner self.
The concept of residential schools has gained significant attention and debate in recent years. Some believe that being a close-knit community, residential schools cannot prepare their students to face the impact of social dynamics in the outside world, that their exposure to diverse perspectives and experiences is limited. Concerns are also raised regarding the mental and emotional well-being of students.
Well, residential schools strive to create a harmonious environment where students live, learn and grow together. Residential schools promise to groom well-rounded individuals by offering them a range of activities beyond academics like sports, various forms of art, leadership and exchange programmes. Like a true utopian society, residential schools aim to promote inclusivity and embrace diversity. Residential schools foster personal growth by nurturing individual’s unique talents and passion. Counselling services and supportive environment try to ensure the emotional well- being and mental health of students.
Rather than aspiring for a fictional utopian world, the goal of education should be nurturing the body, mind, heart and soul of students who are equipped with skills and empowered with values to face the challenges of the world, and capable of thriving in an imperfect yet constantly evolving world.
